Tool and Die Steel W1 Bars generally consist of carbon (0.70–1.50%), manganese (0.10–0.40%), silicon (0.10–0.40%), and small amounts of vanadium. This specific blend results in high hardness and excellent edge retention after heat treatment. When properly quenched and tempered, W1 steel can reach a hardness of 60–65 HRC, providing outstanding wear resistance. However, as a water-hardening tool steel, it does have lower toughness compared to oil-hardening grades, but it compensates with superior sharpness and fine finishes.
